Obituary

Thomas “Tom” Alois Bulawa, age 91, of West Bend, WI, was called home to the Lord on May 4th, 2026, at 6:30 am, cradled in the gentle embrace of his loving family. With grace and quiet dignity, he departed this world, surrounded by those who cherished him most.

Born beneath a summer sky on Independence Day, July 4th, 1934, in Milwaukee, WI, Tom entered the world as a blessing to Al and Alice Bulawa, a birthdate befitting a man whose heart beat for his country. In 1972, he found his soulmate in Lois Raddatz, and together they wove a tapestry of love, devotion, and shared dreams.

Tom answered his country’s call, serving nobly in the Army Corps of Engineers. With a mind both curious and disciplined, he earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Engineering and Marketing from Marquette University. In the halls of A.O. Smith, where he devoted 42 years as Manager of Engineering, his legacy stands tall, most notably, the creation of a custom paint shop that forever changed the heavy truck rail industry. Colleagues and clients alike admired his wisdom and unwavering integrity.

Tom’s heart was most alive in the laughter of family gatherings, in the camaraderie of dear friends, and amid the emerald fairways of the golf course. He delighted in the chase for that elusive hole-in-one, upholding the game’s virtues of patience and honor. In his garden, he found quiet joy, tending earth and roots, planting hope and legacy with every tree.

His soul found solace in Door County, watching sunlight dance atop gentle waves, the porch his sanctuary as morning’s first light warmed his face, and a cup of coffee rested in his hands. Tom’s meticulous record-keeping and perfect penmanship reflected a mind attuned to beauty and order. His unshakable faith in God illuminated his path, guiding a lifelong devotion to his church. Selfless and humble, he gave of his time and talents, serving on countless committees for St. Francis Cabrini Parish. Tom led by quiet example, inspiring others to serve and uplift their community.

A steadfast friend and confidant, Tom treasured his relationships deeply. With both pen and heart, he kept a list of loved ones and reached out often, ensuring that no one felt alone or forgotten. His generosity knew no bounds, ever ready to lend a hand, to listen, to offer comfort. As a mentor, he patiently guided younger engineers, sharing not just knowledge but the spirit of curiosity and dedication that defined his life.

Those who remain to cherish Tom’s memory include his beloved wife, Lois; his devoted sister, Sandra Kuester; his children, Robert Bulawa, Susan Reoch, John Bulawa, and Jennifer Steinly. He is lovingly remembered by his cousin, Ken Guenther, and wife, Ellen, along with their extended family, as well as by nieces, nephews, and a circle of friends whose lives he touched.

He is reunited in eternal peace with his parents and his beloved son, Thomas S. Bulawa. The family offers heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Samaritan and Hospice for their boundless compassion and care.
