Phillip E. “Phil” Hanson, 87, of West Bend, passed away on October 27, 2025, at Kathy Hospice in the town of Polk.
This is a true story, Phil Hanson’s journey began on September 24, 1938, in the river town of LaCrosse, born to Chester and Evelyn (nee Kolbo) Hanson. After graduating high school, he answered the call of duty and served two proud years in the U.S. Army. Life led him to West Bend, where fate—and a pair of skates—introduced him to Rita Gonring at the local rink. Their love story took flight on April 28, 1961, when they tied the knot in West Bend.
Phil’s passion for the skies soared early; by 24, he had earned his pilot’s license. Over the years, he owned multiple aircraft, including one he meticulously built with his own hands. He even flew commercially out of the West Bend Airport, blending skill with adventure. On the ground, his ingenuity shone through as he designed and sold casket lifts nationwide—a testament to his inventive spirit.
But Phil’s true gift was laughter. With a joke always at the ready and a twinkle in his eye, he brought smiles wherever he went. Breakfast outings with friends were among his favorite rituals, filled with good food and even better company. Phil lived with heart, humor, and a knack for lifting spirits—whether by plane or punchline.
Those Phil leaves behind to cherish his memory include his wife, Rita; two children, Jeffrey Hanson of California and Todd (Lori) Hanson of Allenton; four grandchildren, Michael, Lauren, Brooke, and Rachel; three great-grandchildren, Hayden, Hunter, and Harper; other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by three brothers, Don Hanson, Duane Hanson, and Skip.
