Matthew Kanglee Berchild's Obituary

February 24, 1989 ~ April 2, 2026

Matthew Kanglee Berchild passed away at The Kathy Hospice in West Bend, WI, after a courageous battle with cancer. Throughout his ordeal, Matt remained strong and made all the decisions regarding his treatment options, including the difficult decision on when to enter hospice care. He died knowing he was loved by his family.

Born February 24, 1989, in Pusan, South Korea, Matt was adopted by Daniel and Mary Beth (née Sylvester) Berchild. Matt arrived in Wisconsin in August, 1989, and became a U.S. citizen in 1991. Matt grew up in Germantown, WI, and had many fond memories of his youth there. After graduating from the Germantown School System, Matt attained a welding degree from MATC and began working for the Iron Workers Local 8. Matt worked on many construction projects throughout southeastern and southcentral Wisconsin.

Matt was a gamer in his personal life, starting from the first time he received a handheld device as a present. Eventually, he moved on to more complex gaming systems and regularly competed online with other players from around the country. In conjunction with video games, Matt owned a large collection of fantasy board games and enjoyed challenging his friends to a match. Matt was also an avid movie aficionado, often wanting to catch new releases on their opening day.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Froedtert Cancer Center, the Froedtert Center for Advanced Care, Horizon Home Care and Hospice, and The Kathy Hospice for their valiant efforts to find a cure for Matt, and later to carry him through to the end with kindness and dignity. No words can adequately express our gratitude.

A Private Service will be held at the Myrhum-Patten funeral home (1315 W. Washington Street, West Bend, WI). Burial will follow afterwards at West Bend’s Washington County Memorial Park. Those who wish to honor Matt’s memory are encouraged to donate to either The Froedtert Hospital Foundation, Horizon Home Care and Hospice, or The American Cancer Association.

Rest in peace, Matt. Though your journey through life was short, it was memorable. We will never forget you.

Myrhum-Patten Funeral & Cremation Service has been entrusted with Matt’s arrangements. Additional information and guest book can be found at www.myrhum-patten.com.
