Obituary

Lawrence “Larry” Joseph Haas of West Bend, 91, died peacefully with family at his side on April 29, 2026.

Larry was born on June 2, 1934, in Carlton County, Minnesota; parents, John and Gladys Haas (Groeschel). The family moved from Minnesota to Wisconsin where his father John owned Haas Garage in Batavia. Larry graduated from Random Lake High School in 1952. He was united in marriage to Ella Mae Flom of Random Lake on July 11, 1953, in Cascade, Wisconsin. They celebrated 68 years of marriage together in 2021.

Larry and Ella Mae moved to West Bend in 1960. Here they raised their three children, Jeff (Shirley) Haas (Olney, Montana), Kevin Haas (deceased), and Kristi (Dan) Lawrence (West Bend).

Larry began his career as a welder at the Gehl Company becoming foreman of the department. He was an inspector in the Test Division of the Product Development Department at the time of his retirement after 39 years of service. Larry was a past Associate Member of the American Welding Society and certified welder, and a member of the Gehl Hexelbank Club. He then took his skills and experience to Snow-Way International of Hartford as the Quality Manager for approximately 10 years. While there Larry worked with sub-contractors ensuring high Snow-Way standards were being met and wrote the company’s Engineering Department-Standard Practices manual, an achievement he was proud of. He also was the holder of several U.S. Patents and copyrights.

Larry and Ella enjoyed over 20 years of retirement together as snowbirds in southern Nevada. His favorite attraction there was Harrah’s Automobile Museum, and when time allowed, he worked on restoring his 1934 Ford Model A. He enjoyed planting a large vegetable garden at the “Farm” every summer and sharing the harvest. Larry loved all things Wisconsin; the Green Bay Packers, ice and Lake Michigan fishing, snowmobiling, Elkhart Lake’s Road America, deer hunting, and last but not least a cold beer. In the last four years he saw the births of his four great grandchildren and the joy they brought.

Larry is missed and survived by his children Jeff (Shirley) and Kristi (Dan); grandchildren Emily (Kevin) Gall, Hannah (Clint) Banfield, and Peter Lawrence; great grandchildren Gwen and Iris Gall, Evelyn and Bennett Banfield; and other relatives and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Mae; parents, John and Gladys Haas; son, Kevin; in-laws, Lawrence and Frances Flom; brother, Donald Haas; sister, Gladys Koepke; and nephew, Scott Koepke.

The family would like to thank all the staff and caregivers of Horizon Home Hospice and Kathy Hospice for their compassionate care.

A private inurnment will be held in September at Washington County Memorial Park in West Bend.
