Kristine Diane née Hughes was born September 19, 1953 to Wilbur James “Jeff” Hughes and Edna Almeta née Lautenschlager in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was made a part of God’s family through the washing and regeneration of Holy Baptism on November 1, 1953 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salt Lake City. She confirmed her Christian faith on May 14, 1967 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Santa Rosa, California. Her Confirmation Verse is Matthew 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have command you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

On June 28, 1975 she was united in Holy Matrimony with Michael John Schram at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Santa Rosa. Their union was blessed with three children: Rebecca Kristine, Matthew John James and Jeffrey Lawrence.

Her faith in Christ Jesus as her Lord and Savior, given to her by the Holy Spirit through Holy Baptism, has always been a source of great strength, especially during the challenges of life. In 2002 her son, Matthew, suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for nearly 5 years before the Lord took him home.

In 2021 she was diagnosed with Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Her treatment killed the cancer but left her with aphasia, reduced strength and coordination on her right side, cognitive deficits that made communication difficult, and balance issues. The following year she was diagnosed with a second rare and aggressive cancer, Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

Kristine had a MRI this past November 10th that showed her PCNS Lymphoma had returned. Because she did not tolerate chemotherapy the first time and already had radiation therapy there were no treatment options.

Each of these situations were extremely challenging, but the Lord surrounded her with His presence and fulfilled in her His promise found in the words St. Paul in Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Focusing on the glorious reception she will experience in heaven, her faith did not waiver.

Kristine was preceded in death by her parents and son, Matthew. She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Michael John, six grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Cynthia Piccinini and Pamela Anne (Randall) Norris, and other family and friends.

Rev. Jeff Hesse will officiate at Kristine’s funeral service on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at St. John’s Lutheran Church (809 S. 6th Ave, West Bend, WI).
