Howie was born in North Freedom, WI during a St. Nicholas day snow storm on December 6, 1926, and lived a life rooted in family. Growing up with his sister Alice, he enjoyed his childhood. From an early age, he learned the value of hard work and devotion to family running his paper route and taking on other various jobs to help support the family. After an early Baraboo High School graduation at age 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy.
A proud veteran of World War II, he served honorably stationed in the Pacific theater. Upon returning, he attended Madison Business College eventually relocating to Milwaukee where his life changed forever. It was there he met the love of his life, Dolores, on a blind date. They were married on April 30, 1949, and shared a lifetime of love for over 70 years.
Howie was a master printer and established Lange Printing Company. Together with his son, Thomas, and support from his family, they built and operated the business for over 50 years.
Howie had many hobbies but mostly loved family gatherings, music, and everything outdoors. He was happiest camping, fishing and boating. Showing his zest for life, he even water skied one last time at the age of 76 impressing everyone by getting up on his first try. He was active in his community and church at the local, district and state levels. He held leadership roles including a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and roles within the Kiwanis Club of Menomonee Falls.
Howie is preceded in death by his wife Dolores Lange (Banaszak), sister Alice Zindler (Lange), son-in-law Timothy Tully, and granddaughter Katherine "Katie" Ball. Survived by his children Nancy (Lee) Ball, Patricia Tully, Mary (Steven) Kraemer, Thomas (Gina) Lange and niece and nephew Laura and Randy Zindler.
