West Bend

Evelyn “Evie” Mae De Smidt, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away at the age of 97 on October 3, 2025, in West Bend, WI. She was born on February 2, 1928, to Harold C and Doris Mae (nee Wrucke) Johnson in Campbellsport, Wisconsin where she grew up and graduated from Campbellsport High School.

Evelyn married Myron Foster De Smidt on October 16, 1948, and moved to West Bend where they resided until 1957 when they moved to McAllen, Texas for 10 years, then back to West Bend. Together they raised three children. Carol Jean Schacht (Thomas) of St Johns, Florida, Gary Lee De Smidt (Mary) of West Bend, Wisconsin and David Myron De Smidt (Wendy) of Hartford, Wisconsin. She was the proud “Grammie” to Jessica Schacht (Mark Velarde) of St Johns, Florida, Courtney Schacht Applewhite of Thomasville, Georgia and Jaimee Hrabik (Johnny) of Merton, Wisconsin. Also a special Great-Grammie to Donzee, Palmer and Bowen Applewhite, Kade Schacht, Lilly Velarde and Magnolia Hrabik. Evelyn cherished her family and always put them first.

Along with the love of family, she had a special place in her heart for the Green Bay Packers and secondly, the Jacksonville Jaguars. She loved to craft, play bingo and cards as well as travel to casinos to play her penny slots. She got lucky a few times!

Evelyn came from a large family of nine children. Surviving her is her brother George (Dorothy) Johnson of Sebring, Florida and her sister-in-law LaVerne Johnson of Grafton, Wisconsin and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Those leaving this world before her were her parents, her sisters Mildred Krief, Fern Krief, Lois Straub, Darlene Shaudvitis, Faye Wallenfelz and five brother-in-laws, her brothers Norman Johnson & Donald Johnson.

A private ceremony for immediate family will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Myrhum-Patten Funeral & Cremation Service. Inurnment will be at Union Cemetery in Campbellsport, Wisconsin.
