Edwin George Gutermann

October 15, 1935 – June 4, 2025

On June 4th, Edwin (Ed) Gutermann was called to his heavenly home. He was born in the Town of Jackson at home on October 15, 1935, the son of Joseph and Esther (nee Kowalske) Gutermann. He was granted spiritual rebirth through the sacrament of Holy Baptism on October 27, 1935, at Trinity Lutheran Church in the town of Jackson. Ed was later confirmed in his faith on April 10, 1949, at David’s Star Lutheran Church in Kirchhayn. His confirmation passage was Matthew 10:32 “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.”

Ed attended David’s Star Lutheran School for elementary and West Bend High School.

Ed began his career with Kiekhaefer Mercury Marine in 1951. He had a brief interruption from August 1954 to July 1958 while he served in the United States Navy as an airplane mechanic.

Ed was very active in his local church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Brownsville, as well as Winnebago Lutheran Academy, Wisconsin Lutheran College, and OWLS-Organization of WELS Seniors Chapter 77, Lomira/Brownsville holding officer positions with the local chapter and National OWLS.

On August 22, 1959, he was united in marriage with Stefanie Reseburg at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in West Bend. The couple settled in the Town of Cedarburg (Kirchhayn) and started their family of two daughters. When Mercury Marine moved its headquarters to Fond du Lac in 1966, the family then moved to Brownsville. Ed and Stefanie moved again in 1989 when Mercury Marine transferred Ed to Stillwater, Oklahoma. They remained there until his retirement in 1999 when they returned to Brownsville once again.

Ed worked in various capacities at Mercury and eventually worked with the computers as they were first introduced into the work environment. Overall, he worked for 44 years for Mercury and was eighth on the overall seniority list when he retired.

In addition to volunteering at church, Ed also served as a 4-H leader, first with South Byron 4-H, as his daughters were members and then with Welcome 4-H where his grandchildren and now great grandchildren are members.

Ed enjoyed watching the Packers and Brewers. He also loved to travel with Stefanie to many places around the world with Tom’s Christian Tours. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 65 years, Stefanie, and their children Cynthia (James) Koffman, Eden, and Linda (Larry) Essman, Fond du Lac. He is further survived by grandchildren Andrew (Katie) Koffman, Anthony (Jessica) Koffman, Joseph (Lindsey) Koffman, Jered Knebel, and Catherine (Andrew) Ehlers. Eleven great grandchildren Hannah, Peter, Grace, Patrick, David, Stefanie, Jana, Lena, and Nora Koffman and Elizabeth and Caroline Ehlers. Sister Mildred (Allen) Zarling and sister-in-law Donna Gutermann, Judy Reseburg, Laurie (Rodney) Justman, Gale (Michael) Logan and brothers-in-law John Reseburg and Mike (Diane) Reseburg, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Esther, in-laws Harlow and Mary Reseburg, brother Walter, and brother George (the late Yvonne) Gutermann, Sisters in Law Donna Holderman and Melanie Reseburg and Brother-in-law Harlow Reseburg II.

Ed’s family will greet relatives and friends from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (605 Highland Ave, Brownsville, WI 53006), on Monday, June 30.
