Carol B. Volm, 90, of the town of Wayne, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Kettle Moraine Gardens in Kewaskum with her children at her side.
Carol entered the world on December 22, 1935, in the small town of Wayne, born to Oscar and Vinelda (Boettcher) Griepentrog. On April 25, 1953, she married the love of her life, Merlin Volm, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Nenno, a partnership that lasted a lifetime. Merlin preceded her in death on January 19, 2021.
Together, Carol and Merlin built their life on the farm in the town of Wayne. Carol poured her heart into everything she touched: tending her gardens, delighting in the sight of cardinals, and dominating any game she played, always winning, and never needing to cheat. She was a gifted cook and baker, known especially for her unforgettable German Potato Salad, and she cherished the years spent farming side by side with Merlin. Their winters as Florida snowbirds brought them joy and sunshine.
In recent years, Carol made a new home at Kettle Moraine Gardens, where she formed many treasured friendships. Above all, she loved time spent with her family. Visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the highlight of her days, and she wore her title of “grandma the great” with pride and affection.
Those Carol leaves behind to cherish her memory include five children, Debby (Dennis) Terlinden of Allenton, Gwen (Jim) Schmidt of Allenton, Terry (Kim) Volm of Kewaskum, Susie (Jerry) Herman of Kewaskum, and Sandy Zehren of Kewaskum; 12 grandchildren, Tim (Tracy) Herman, Keith (Bonnie) Herman, Ryan (Missy) Herman, Sandy (Randy) Fleishman, Mike (Kelly) Schmidt, Jason (Sara) Schmidt, Shaun (Sandi) Volm, Justin (Shelly) Volm, Scott (Jamie) Herman, Brandon Herman, Stacy (Scott) Nelson, Shelly (Ryan) LaDuke; 25 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Milton Griepentrog, Ruth Sauer, and Shirley Frazier; three sisters-in-law, Linda Kaehne, Joanne Volm, and Rosie Griepentrog; other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Carol was preceded in death by a son in infancy, Joseph; a son-in-law, Steve Zehren; two brothers, Lester Griepentrog and Arland (Jane) Griepentrog; three sisters-in-law, Ruth (Norman) Arbogash, Adeline (Richard) Weis, and Eileen (Regenald) Pierret; five brothers-in-law, Bernard Kaehne, Robert Volm, William (Peggy) Volm, Roman Sauer, and Lee Frazier; and her parents-in-law, William and Agnes Volm.
